Gian Franco Grancelli May 31, 1940 – June 09, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Gian Franco Grancelli, son of the late Gerolomo Grancelli and Anna Ondolati was born May 31st, 1940 in Framura (PR La Spezia). At the age of 17, he enlisted to work on the ships to start training to become a cook. After a few years, he was promoted to chief steward. He then continued to travel around the world while working on different cruise, cargo ship and oil tankers until 1980, when he decided to settle in New York City to pursue his dreams of working as a chef in restaurants. He reconnected with Mario Balducci and Antonio Bongioanni, who he traveled with on the ships, where they asked for him to join in, on opening 3 Authentic Northern Italian business establishments. Ristorante Divino, Café Divino and Divino Gastronomia all located on 2nd Avenue between 80th and 81st. At Divino Gastronomia he then met Anna Gurgliaccio, which resulted in holy matrimony in May of 1985. This union was blessed with three children. Mr. Grancelli was an active member in many lodges but mainly in the Freemason Garibaldi Lodge of New York and the IOOF Hispano America Lodge of New York. He became the grandmaster with the Freemason Garibaldi in 1990. He continued to pursue his passion for cooking while singing in 3 different languages, as he would often do. As a result of his generous spirit and pleasant personality, he was loved by many and will remain in the lives of all who knew him. Gian Franco Grancelli departed peacefully on Sunday, June 9th, 2019 at the family’s residence in Manhattan, NY. He leaves behind: his wife Anna, daughter Fiona, son Carlo and daughter Antonia Grancelli. His life will forever be cherished in the lives of his family and friends. The Grancelli Family Gian Franco Grancelli, figlio di Gerolomo Grancelli e Anna Ondolati, nacque il 31 Maggio 1940 a Framura, in provincia di La Spezia. A 17 anni inizio’ a lavorare su navi per iniziare il training per diventare cuoco. Dopo pochi anni venne promosso capo delegato. Lavorando su diverse navi da crociera, navi da carico e petroliere continuo’ a viaggiare per il mondo fino al 1980, quando decise di stabilirsi a New York per perseguire i suoi sogni di lavorare come chef nei ristoranti. In questo periodo entro’ nuovamente in contatto con Mario Balducci ed Antonio Bongioanni, con i quali aveva viaggiato sulle navi, quando il due gli hanno chiesto di unirsi l’apertura di tre ristoranti che d’affare autentica cucina del Nord Italia: Ristorante Divino, Café e Divino Gastronomia, tutti sulla Seconda avenue tra 80 e 81. Lavorando a Divino Gastronomia conobbe Anna Gurgliaccio, con la quale si uni’ in sacro matrimonio nel Maggio 1985. Questa unione fu benedetta dalla nascita di tre figli. Il signor Grancelli era un attivo partecipante di diverse associazioni, in particolare la Massoneria Garibaldi Lodge di New York e la IOOF Hispano America Lodge di New York. Divenne il gran maestro del Massoneria Garibaldi nel 1990. Continuo’ a coltivare la sua passione per la cucina mentra cantava in 3 lingue diverse, come ha sempre fatto. Amato da molti grazie al suo spirito generoso e personalita’ piacevole, rimarra’ nelle vite di tutti coloro i quali lo conoscevano. Gian Franco Grancelli si e’ spento serenamente circondato dai suoi cari il 9 Giugno 2019 nella sua casa a Manhattan. Lascia sua moglie Anna, figlia Fiona, figlio Carlo, e figlia Antonia Grancelli. La sua vita verra’ per sempre celebrata nella vita della sua famiglia ed amici.
