Ben’s life was very full of adventure. He was born in Okmulgee and is a direct descendant of Chief Samuel Checote who served three times during the reconstruction period. Ben attended Sequoyah Boarding School in Tahlequah, OK where he played drums for a band and “polished all the floors” as punishment for being a cut-up. He transplanted to Georgia to represent his tribe as the first Mvskoke back at the old lands and made a trip to Paris. He worked as an Interpreter for the National Park Service at the Okmulgee National Monument and became a Descendent at Gilcrease Museum. He was a caring person that could handle stress, so he worked as an EMT, and later as a Phlebotomist in Dialysis/Plasma services for over 25 years. He filled his life with music, played the drums for several bands, and volunteered for Riverparks Authority doing concerts and events. He usually knew something about everything. He will be missed greatly! There will be a Visitation for Ben at McClendon-Winters Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 from 5-7pm. Arrangements have been entrusted to the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home of Okmulgee. To send a memorial gift to the family of Benjamin Gilbert Checotah please visit our Sympathy Store.
