Benjamin’s Obituary A Life Well Lived Funeral services for Benjamin F. Edwards, Sr. (Benny), age 85, of Ada, Oklahoma will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday at Trinity Baptist Church, Ada. Dr. Rusty Fuller and Rev. David Gray will officiate. Interment will follow at the Konawa Cemetery. Benjamin F. Edwards, Sr. (Benny) passed away in the presence of his family on Father’s Day, June 16, 2019. He was born April 30, 1934 in Ada to T. P. Edwards and Paulyne (Cole) Edwards. Benny married Sammy Jones, January 14, 1954 in Konawa, OK. He enjoyed bass fishing on Lake Konawa and Lake Texoma, camping out with his Jayco Camping Club of Oklahoma City, and raising his black Angus Cattle at his Konawa farms. Spending time with his family was always a priority as was his Australian Shepherd dog “Sam”. He is survived by his wife, Sammy of 65 years; son, Dr. Benjamin F. Edwards, Jr. and wife Rita of Ada; daughter, Dee Bond and husband Rick of Moore, OK; seven grandchildren, Dr. Trey Edwards and wife Lindsey of Ada, Clayton Edwards and wife Jennifer of Ada, Kayli Diamond and husband Grant of Frisco, TX, Tommy Bond and wife Erin of Yukon, OK, Britni Trimble and husband Landon of Noble, OK, Brooklyn Bond Orth and husband Jeriah of Noble, OK and Ryan Bond of Oklahoma City, OK; seven great-grandchildren, Drew, Bryce and Finn Edwards, Rory and Judah Diamond, and Aria and Liam Bond; and a step-brother, Roy Wisecarver, Bentonville, AR. Benny was preceded in death by his father, T. P. Edwards; his mother, Paulyne Wisecarver; grandmother, Bonnie Hallmark; brother, Jerry Edwards; sister, Sharon McWilliams; and a great-granddaughter, Anna Elaine Edwards. Benny worked as a commercial pipe-fitter out of Union Local #344 in Oklahoma City. As a pipefitter in commercial construction, Benny thought everyone else was “a half a bubble off” according to his level or he would say “What’s wrong with those peckerwoods?” He loved the town of Ada and OU Football, especially when Ada kids were playing for the Sooners. When returning from working in the oilfields of New Mexico and Montana in the dead of winter he thought Ada looked so good to him. Benny became a Christian at Oak Avenue Baptist Church as a youth. In 1941, World War II sent his Navy family to Miami Beach, Florida and New Orleans, Louisiana. While in Miami Beach, Benny climbed palm trees, ate coconuts, drank coconut milk and ate Cuban sandwiches. This is probably why his family was one of the few buying coconuts from the Piggly Wiggly grocery store in Konawa later in his adult life. While in New Orleans, Benny and his brother, Jerry Don lived their childhood much like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. They swam in the Mississippi River with shrimp nibbling at their feet. They dodged quick sand and kept a good lookout for water moccasins and alligators. When the Navy’s hospital ships landed in the port of New Orleans bringing wounded soldiers to catch the troop trains going farther inland, Benny would try to do his patriotic duty as a 10 year old running candy bars to the soldiers as they flipped him a nickel. This love of running later showed up when Benny helped win track trophies for Glenwood Grade School while he attended there. Later at Ada High School, he ran track for Elvan George, who he greatly admired. Sometimes though, Benny said maybe it wasn’t the love of running as much as it was the benefit of getting outside and missing class for track meets. Benny loved being outside and worked as a carhop and soda jerk for the Kit Kat Restaurant on Main Street in Ada. Of course his grandmother, Ma Edwards, was the manager so he couldn’t get by with too much. Later, the city boy Benny, met the country girl Sammy at the petrified wood tree by what is now East Central University. Their courtship and later marriage started his love of horses and cattle. They were married 65 years in January. Benny and Sammy bought their first farm on Summers Chapel Road near Konawa while both in their thirties. Sammy started teaching at Konawa Schools in 1962 and Benny then went to trade school at Okmulgee State Tech where he obtained his pipefitters certificate. He spent the next 30 years working out of local pipefitters Union #344, Oklahoma City. Benny worked all over Oklahoma doing construction jobs at Fort Sill in Lawton, Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City, Myriad Convention Center in Oklahoma City, the dormitories at ECU, along with the ECU Golden Dome, Carl Albert Hospital in Ada, the Lifestyle Center in Davis and doing refinery turnarounds in Wynnewood and Ardmore refineries. Through most of these projects, he tried to always drive home nightly to be close to his family. Benny taught junior high boys Sunday School Classes at First Baptist Church, Konawa and assisted with Boy Scout Troops there as well. He leaves behind his Christian based family as his greatest legacy who he loved always as he loved God. Read More
