Walter (Walt) Francis Shafer, loving husband of Dorothy, died at the age of 77 in Land O Lakes, Florida on May 20, 2019, just one day after celebrating their 35th Wedding Anniversary. Walt was born in Canandaigua, New York and grew up in West Bloomfield, New York where he graduated from Honeoye Falls Central High School, as President of his class. He stayed in touch with many of his classmates until the time of death. Walt received a degree in Physics from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York and a Masters Degree in Photography from Rochester Institute of Technology. Walt proudly served his country working for the Central Intelligence Agency for 32 years, during which time he received many awards and recognition for his many contributions. After retiring in 1997 from the CIA, he was employed by Lockheed Martin Corporation part-time for five years. Walt’s greatest joy was his worldwide travels with his wife Dorothy. They especially loved their many visits to every corner of Europe. These travels allowed Walt to pursue his lifelong passion for photography. Walt was a student of history and well informed on world affairs and a dedicated contributor to the communities in which he lived. He took and interest in everyone he met, treated everyone with kindness and respect and formed many lasting friendships. He had a great love his daughters and grandchildren and took special pride in their many accomplishments. Walt is survived by his wife Dorothy Shearer Shafer; daughters Kathleen Shafer of Yarmouth, Maine and Karen Ames and her husband Christopher of Addison, New York; grandchildren Claire, Danny and Katharine Ames; brother John Shafer of Lake George, New York. He is predeceased by his father and mother Harold J. Shafer and Francis Biek Shafer and his sister, Mary Jo Shafer. Many thanks to the medical team at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida for their dedication and care. A private burial service will be held on June 1st, 2019 for immediate family members and friends. Burial will be at the St. Raymond’s Catholic Cemetery in Melcroft, Pennsylvania.
