John Wesley “Wes” Clemens, 67, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 11:53 P.M. May 18, 2019 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was born July 21, 1951 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to the late Roy Howard and Thelma Gwendolyn (Joy) Clemens. He married Jane Schulte on November 25, 1995 in Mount Vernon where she surives. In addition to his beloved wife of twenty-three years, Wes is survived by his brother, Jerry Clemens and wife, Nyla Joyce of Creve Coeur, Missouri; sister, Alice Smith and husband, Robert of Mount Vernon; mother-in-law, Joan L. Schulte; three brothers-in-law, Arthur J. Schulte and wife, Cheryl of Mount Vernon, William A. “Bill” Schulte and wife, Vickie of Mount Vernon, and John A. Schulte of Columbus, Indiana; two sisters-in-law, Debra A. Denham and Donna Mays and husband, Donnie, all of Mount Vernon; and several nieces and nephews In addition to his parents, Wes was preceded in death by his infant brother, Byford Clemens and father-in-law, Art Schulte. Wes graduated from the Police Training Institute in Springfield, Illinois then worked as a patrolman for the Mount Vernon City Police Department for 28 years before retiring in 2001. He was a lifelong member of the NRA and an avid supporter of the Second Amendment. He will be remembered as a true cowboy who loved his horses. Wes was a strong member of the Baptist faith; he is dearly loved by his friends and family, and will be missed by all who knew him. A Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, May 23, 2019 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois with a First Responders’ Walk-Through beginning at 7:30 P.M. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, May 24, 2019 at Hughey Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Degenhart officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Garden in Woodlawn. Memorials, in Wes’s loving memory, may be made to the Second Amendment Foundation or the National Rifle Association.
