John Hazy July 24 1918 May 12 2019 (age 100)

John Hazy, age 100, of Elizabeth Township, passed away Sunday evening May 12, 2019, at the Southwestern Assisted Living Facility in West Mifflin. Born July 24, 1918 in Wickhaven, he was a son of the late Peter J. and Anna (Chaybin) Hazy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wives, Margery (Shaver) Hazy of 35 years, and Anna (Francesconi) Trafalis Hazy of 19 years; and by his brothers Joseph, Steve and James Hazy, and sisters, Margaret Renn and Mary Lomagno. Retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Chief Master Sargent with 29 years of service, John was a WWII veteran who served in Puerto Rico, Panama, Guatemala and Thurleigh, England as a Tail Gunner and Toggalier in both B-17 and B-24 airplanes. At the height of the war, John became a Prisoner of War for 13 months in Stalag XVII B. Krems, Austria after being shot down on a bombing mission near Munich, Germany. Among his many medals for conduct and valor, John was awarded the Air Force Medal, and as a result of his wounds, he was also awarded a Purple Heart. He was a life member of the American POW’s and the Disabled American Veterans, and was also a member of the V.F.W. He is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. There will be no visitation or services. Private burial will be in Round Hill Cemetery, Elizabeth Township. Memorial contributions can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
