Obituary for Edward Alford Herring Edward Alford (“Eddie”) Herring was born on October 24, 1937 in Jackson, Mississippi to Milton and Christine Herring. He was shortly followed by his sister Jo Ann and brother Charles “Sonny”. Milton got a job with Phillips Petroleum Company and moved the family to Borger, Texas in July, 1950. Eddie attended school in Borger and graduated from Borger High School in May, 1955. Upon graduation from high school Eddie received a college scholarship from Phillips Petroleum Company to attend Texas Tech University. He was the first person in his family to receive a college degree. In 1959 he married Elaine Adams of Lubbock, Texas. He graduated from Texas Tech with a bachelors degree in Petroleum Engineering and was hired by Conoco. The couple eventually were sent to Wichita Falls, Texas where their daughter Elizabeth was born, then on to Midland, Texas where their son Todd was born. In 1968 Conoco transferred the family to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where Eddie worked for Dubai Petroleum Company. This was a different life from the one he had previously led. He found himself sitting across from Sheikhs and eating goat’s eyes (a special honor). The family was able to travel all over the world during this time, visiting countries in Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. Two week “local leaves” to Beirut, Lebanon were a special favorite of the Herring family. During the summers they would return to the States to see family and go to Red River, New Mexico to fish for rainbow trout. Eddie loved fishing and was also able to fish when he worked on the rigs in the Persian Gulf, where instead of rainbow trout he was catching barracudas. In 1971 the family was transferred to London, England. During this time Eddie wrote and gave talks within the Petroleum Engineering Community. Some of his papers were published. He was deeply respected by his fellow engineers. Over the next few years the Herrings moved to New Orleans, Louisiana and then to Houston, Texas. A few years later a move happened which made a great impact on Eddie’s life. He was transferred to Stavanger, Norway. Eddie and Elaine lived for many years in Stavanger. While he was in Norway he learned some Norwegian and took up painting. His son, Todd, married Lise Stadheim, a Norwegian. Eddie was an avid golfer. He passionately played golf on some of the best courses in the world. He was especially thrilled to play on St. Andrews Golf Course in Scotland. Later in life, Eddie and Elaine moved to Lynden, Washington to retire. After Elaine passed away from in cancer in 2008, Eddie moved back to Midland, Texas to be close to his ailing mother and his sister. After his mother passed, Eddie divided his time between his daughter Elizabeth’s home in Santa Monica, California and his home in Lynden, Washington where his closest friends, the Weidenaars and the Spadys still live. Eddie loved to read and would often read a book a day. He particularly loved mysteries and thrillers. He also took up the Japanese Art Form of Temari Balls which he beautifully handcrafted. His favorite musical group was ABBA and he could sing all of the lyrics. He was also a trivia expert. He was a kind and gracious man. Even during the last year of his life when he was struggling with a Traumatic Brain Injury and Dementia, he always tried to rise up when a lady came into the room or to assist when another patient was struggling, even though he couldn’t stand himself. He charmed all of his caregivers with his kind smile and great laugh. Eddie is survived by his sister, Jo Ann Sealy, of Andrews, Texas, his daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Friedemann Schulz of Santa Monica, California, his son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Lise Stadheim Herring of Oman. He has four grandchildren, Adrina and Henrik Schulz, and Richard and Kimberly Ocean Stadheim Herring. He passed away in Bellingham, Washington at the age of 79 with his daughter by his side. He will be dearly missed. He was the kindest of men. To send flowers to the family of Edward Alford Herring, please visit our Heartfelt Sympathies Store.
