She was born February 29, 1932(celebrated on March 1st) in Keystone, West Virginia to the late Mrs. Viola Johnson McCann. She was preceded in death by her stepfather Charles McCann, Sr., three brothers Charles McCann, Jr., Nathan McCann and Alfred McCann and a sister Charles Marie Maxberry. Sister Anna Whatley accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Lexington, KY., upon moving to Dayton, OH she united with the Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church family. Mt. Enon was her second home. Mrs. Whatley along with her sidekick Mrs. Zetty Pentergrass were faithful and instrumental leaders for the “Voices of Enon”, a youth group for church. Whenever there was a function at Mt. Enon, “she was there”. She was a member of the choir, served on the Nurse’s Guild, treasurer for Women’s United, and more. You could always find her at her desk supporting the churches ministries. Everyone knew her as “Ms. Whatley” or “Grannie”. Mrs. Whatley was a 1950 Graduate of the old P.L. Dunbar High School, Lexington, KY. Sister Anna Whatley worked at McCall’s for 20 plus years and upon its closing went on to work at Met Life Insurance Co until retiring. She is survived by two sons: Ronald (Dorethea) Jones, Lexington, KY and Darrell Whatley of Richmond, VA., four grandchildren: Damien Range, Miami, FL, Ronald Adrian Jones, Brian Jones, Lexington, KY, Alexis Whatley, Richmond, VA, great grandchildren: Damien “Ms. D” Range, LaTajah Lesleigh; Three great-great grandchildren; Three sisters Vivian (Lamont Gholston) McCann, Louisville, KY, Linda (Rev. Van) Kentz, Nicholasville, KY and Bonnie (Rick) Godfrey, Fostoria, OH, several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends including a special god daughters Stephney Fair and Theresa Goldsmith. “Her life was a real testament of God’s Love”.
