George Hobbs, Jr. of Blackwater, VA, joined hands with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 4, 2019. Junior had lived a wonderfully abundant life of 89 years. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Minnie and George Hobbs of Big Stone Gap; five brothers and one sister; the mother of his children, Helen Hobbs of Blackwater, who gained her wings in 1994. He is survived by his devoted wife Phyllis, daughters, Faye Livesay, Phyllis Davis, Sue Hobbs, Kathy Hobbs (Jimmy Amburgey) and daughter Cindy Taylor (Kenny). George Hobbs (Brenda), also of Blackwater, is his only son. Although his children numbered only six, Junior leaves behind many, many more in all the lives he touched. All Papaw’s little ones were his children. Also surviving Junior are six sisters and two brothers. As the Bible states, to go forth and multiply, Junior leaves a large and loving family to carry on his works. Twenty-one grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren and twelve great-great grandchildren will hold their Papaw in their hearts forever. “Uncle Junior” is survived by countless nieces and nephews that thought the world of him. In his unforgettable years on this earth, Junior provided parenting to many children in need of love and guidance. As an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman, Junior taught a multitude of children to hunt, fish and farm the land. Junior, like so many men from southwest Virginia, worked many years underground in the coal mines. Many of the community will remember Junior as their bus driver from when they were children. Papaw nurtured many little ones on his knee Sunday mornings with his wonderful homemade gravy from a cast iron skillet spread over crumbled biscuits made lovingly by Mamaw Phyllis. Junior wore camouflage and blue jeans and always loved his kids. As Junior prepared for his heavenly home his heart hurt knowing he would leave behind his wife Phyllis and his children who had all spent countless days and nights by his side. His last days were brightened by the outpouring of love from family and friends as they visited him at the hospital. Junior loved attending auctions with his wife and children. He had followed Slater Auctions for forty years. Danny and Dan brought one of the last smiles to his face and lights in his eyes as they visited him at Holston Valley Medical Center. Until we meet again, “And the winning bidder is Mr. Hobbs!” Visitation for family and friends will be on Saturday, April 6, from 6 until 8:00 p.m. at Robinette Funeral Home in Blackwater. Funeral services will follow. Graveside services will be in the Hobbs Family Cemetery in Blackwater on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Cookhouse, 7088 Canton Road, after the burial.
