Joan “Jo”‘s Obituary STONEVILLE – Joan “Jo” Hopper Comer passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2019. A Celebration of Life Service for Jo will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Madison, 110 S. Franklin Street, Madison, NC 27025. A reception will follow immediately afterward. Jo was born in Madison, North Carolina on April 21, 1942 and was the daughter of the late Daisy Shelton Hopper Wall and Cuff Watson Hopper and stepfather Paul Marion Wall. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Henry Clyde “Dick” Comer II of Stoneville; daughter, Jennifer Marion Comer of Charlotte; grandson, Alexander Comer Abuaita of New York City, NY; granddaughter, Hannah Iris Abuaita of Burlington, VT; sister, Shirley Hopper Martin of Madison; brother, Cuff Watson “CW” Hopper of Madison and sister-in-law, Linda Comer Knight of Stoneville along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Jo was a graduate of Madison High School and an alumna of Western Carolina University where she was a sister of Sigma Kappa Sorority and the University of South Carolina where she pursued a Master’s Degree in Social Work. She worked as a teacher, social worker and a museum guide. Jo loved being a mom to Jennifer and a grandmother (Jo-Jo) to Alexander and Hannah. She was a lifelong member of The First Baptist Church of Madison, and an avid bridge and tennis player. Jo served as a past President of the Western Rockingham Friends of the Library as reading was a lifelong passion for her. She was a member of MARC and the Western Rockingham Service League where she served as a past President.
