Willie E. (Billy) Anderson, 95, passed away January 30, 2019, at his residence. Mr. Anderson was born in Burlison, TN on November 18, 1923, to Mattie Sue Glass and Robert Willie (Doc) Anderson. Billy graduated with honors from Byars-Hall High School where he was a member of the basketball and baseball teams, and attended the University of Tennessee where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He is a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, having served as navigator-bombardier aboard B-29 Super Fortress aircrafts, flying 29 missions over Tokyo and the Japanese empire. He help the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (ret.) serving 25 years in the United States Air Force Reserves. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with two Bronze Stars. Mr. Anderson served 32 years as Tipton County Register of Deeds, and was a past president of the Tennessee Association of County Registers. He also served three terms as treasurer and three terms as a member of the executive committee of the same group. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, former member of Chamber of Commerce and the Covington Jaycees. He was also a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Covington Dunham Lodge No. 150. For over 20 years, he served as literature secretary for the Covington First United Methodist Church Sunday School, a church where he has been a member for over 60 years. He was a former director of the Covington-Tipton County Chamber of Commerce and of Union Savings Bank. An avid golfer, he continued to play golf until his early 90s at the Covington Country Club where he had been a member since it’s formation. Lifelong resident of Tipton County, he was married to the late Anita Roby Anderson. He leaves a son, Dr. Jeff (Pat) Anderson of Bishop, GA, a daughter, Terry Sykes of Germantown, 4 grandchildren, Chris Anderson (Sarah) of Marietta, GA and Tyler Anderson of Japan, Elizabeth (Travis) Webster of Germantown, TN and John (Hannah) Sykes of Rosemark, TN; 5 great-grandchildren, Hudson and Ford Webster and Peyton and Logan Sykes, Easton Anderson and his brother, Ed Anderson (Christie) of Atlanta, Ga. He also leaves a very special lady, whom he loved dearly, Shirley McBride Max and many wonderful friends and caregivers. He was preceded in death by his brothers R. W. Anderson and Gene Anderson ; and his parents. Funeral services will be 2PM Friday, February 1, at Covington First United Methodist Church, with visitation beginning two hours prior. Interment will follow in Covington Memorial Gardens. The family asks that any memorials be made to Covington First United Methodist Church or to Garland United Methodist Church.
