The children consisted of 8 daughters and 1 son. They lived on a farm in the Spring Creek community. The children crossed the Big Branch on their walk to school. The Big Branch was an old swimming hole. Nina married Levi Plank on January 28, 1933. They were married for 65 years. Nina loved to tell the story of their first Christmas. She would say they only had 25 cents to their name. She didn’t say how they spent it, but they were happy. They were neither one strangers to hard work. One summer, early in their marriage they rented some land and planted 3 acres in tomatoes. Imagine the work involved in hoeing and caring for the plants. When the tomatoes ripened they picked them and sold them to the local cannery. Nina was always willing to work. She worked at most of the local factories. Most of her work experience was at whatever factory happened to be in Salem. Levi recapped tires for St. Johns tire shop. The family lived on a farm in the Round Pond community. They attended the Round Pond Baptist Church. Later the moved to Salem and attended the Second Baptist Church. Church was an important part of Nina and Levi’s lives. She loved to have a large garden; enjoyed growing, harvesting and canning produce. Many years she would can 100 quarts of green beans. She also enjoyed sewing, making quilts, and crocheting. Nina loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and taking care of the home. She loved to cook big meals to feed her family and friends. Nobody left her house hungry. She had a great sense of humor. She loved children, probably because she was free to act like one when they were around. If a child was near she had a big smile on her face. There were many changes in the world during her life. From horses and buggy to car and air plane travel. Nina wasn’t much of a traveler, but she was always ready to visit her sister in Oregon.
