Leona Violet Grell August 25, 1919 – January 22, 2019 Leona Violet Grell passed away in Albany, Oregon on January 22, 2019. She was born to Oscar and Emma (Bohlken) Olson August 25, 1919. Leona was one of four children. She graduated from Oak Creek Elementary School in 1933. While attending Albany High School, Leona was a member of the marching band and performed at the Portland Rose Festival two years in a row. She graduated in 1937 and worked at the Frager Furniture Store in Albany and the Linn County Courthouse before marrying Fred Grell February 3, 1945. They lived on farms in Tangent for their entire married life. Leona was an excellent cook. Friends, family, and hired hands enjoyed many a meal around her kitchen table. She grew beautiful flowers and a wide variety of vegetables for her family. She also enjoyed raising chickens for many years. Leona was an officer and long standing member of the Tangent Garden Club. She was very supportive of her childrens’ school and extracurricular activities. While her children were in elementary school, Leona led several 4-H cooking groups for boys, which she greatly enjoyed. Reading and crossword puzzles were her favorite pastimes. She always enjoyed family gatherings. In her later years, Leona volunteered at Linn Benton Community College as a reading tutor. Leona and her husband enjoyed traveling and drove or flew to visit family in various states throughout the years. Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; parents, Oscar and Emma Olson; brothers, Melvin and Arthur Olson; and sister, Anita Pyatt. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Grell of Tangent; son, Kenneth Grell (wife Alicia) of Albany; 2 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; two nieces; and five nephews. A memorial service will be held in her honor on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, 1:00 p.m., at Oakville Presbyterian Church, 29970 Church Rd., Shedd, OR 97377.
