Joann “Jody” Matheney January 23, 1931 – January 22, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Joann “Jody” Leonard Matheney went home to heaven, January 22, 2019. A longtime resident of Jacksonville, she was born in West Blockton, Alabama on January 23, 1931. Jody grew up and graduated high school in Oakridge, Tennessee where she was a majorette. This was during the time of the Manhattan Project that was unknown to the residents in Oakridge.The Manhattan Project was a research and development undertaking during World War II that produced the first nuclear weapons. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Tennessee Technical University, which was then known as Tennessee Polytechnical Institute. There she met her husband of nearly 55 years, Jim Matheney who preceded her in death in 2007. Jim and Jody moved to Jacksonville in the early 60’s. She taught P.E. at Ribault High school and later at several area elementary schools. She attended Jacksonville University where she earned her elementary education teaching certificate and taught 1st and 4th grades Ft. Caroline Elementary where she wrote the school song. Jim and Jody moved to the Lakeland area in the 70’s and spent 20 years there. While in Lakeland she was multi-term president of the Garden Club and taught English to the foreign born (now ESL) and taught Sunday School at Lakeside Baptist Church for many years. Upon returning to Jacksonville in the 90’s, Jody was an active member of the University Medical Center’s Auxiliary, also known as the “Pink Ladies”. She was an avid Gator Fan and loved tailgating with family and friends. Jody is survived by 2 daughters: Jeni Matheney-Arquit and Joanna Matheney; 2 grandchildren: Matthew and Kayla Arquit; 2 step-granddaughters: Ashley and Amanda Arquit and many extended family and friends that dearly loved her too. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, January 27, 2019 in the Event Center at Peeples, 14165 N. Main Street, with Rev. Bruce Galloway officiating. Her family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM prior to the service. Interment will be at Zions Hll Methodist Church in Shelbyville, Tennessee alongside her beloved husband. The family request that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Jody’s memory to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society: donate.lls.org/lls/donate.
