Mrs. Gene Rebecca (Phelps) Hale, 87, of Waynesboro, PA passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones at Hershey Medical Center on Sunday, January 20, 2019. Gene was born in Clemmons, NC on March 16, 1931 to John and Edna (Lashmit) Phelps. She attended Methodist School of Nursing in Indianapolis, IN. Gene remained very close to her classmates and attended numerous reunions and get-togethers throughout years, and she valued those friendships greatly. Upon graduation she worked as an operating room nurse in various cities including Ann Arbor, MI, where she met her future husband, James “Jim” Alexander Hale, Sr. They were married on August 29, 1959 in Ann Arbor. Gene and Jim had a son, James “Jim” Alexander Hale, Jr., born April 20, 1966. The family lived in Michigan and Ohio before finally settling in Waynesboro in the summer of 1974. Gene was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro and loved traveling and particularly enjoyed spending time in Bar Harbor, Maine, the Outer Banks in North Carolina, and Alaska. She also adored her family and had two sisters, Mary Lou Martin and Emily Nunn, with whom she was very close until the day of her passing. Gene is survived by her husband, Jim Hale, Sr.; her son Jim Hale, Jr. and his wife, Lois Madeline of Centerville, VA; and two grandchildren Alexander William and Noelle Madeline. She was loved greatly by her family and friends and maintained a positive loving attitude until the day of her passing. Services will be held 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 26, 2019 in The Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro, 105 E. Main Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268 with the Rev. Ruth Ward officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, S. Potomac Street, Waynesboro. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Friday evening in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad Street, Waynesboro, and an hour prior to the service, Saturday morning, in the church.
