Bernard Calvin Witherspoon, 72, of Winston-Salem, NC was born to the late Joe and Jesse Mae Witherspoon Brewer. He was surrounded by family when he departed from this world for his heavenly home on Thursday morning, January 24, 2019 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Bernard attended and graduated from Atkins High School class of 1964. Bernard met his companion of over 36 years, Gloria J. Caldwell. He was blessed with two beautiful biological daughters, Kendra and Briana Witherspoon and he raised Michelle Caldwell and Crystal (Nate) Belcher as his daughters also. All four girls were his world. He began his career with RJR Reynolds Tobacco Company and retired after serving 35 years. Bernard was a God fearing man and loved to sing and talk with his buddies on Tuesdays at K&W on Healy Drive, Winston-Salem. He was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church where he taught Bible Study and also assisted in serving the homeless on Friday’s. He has a melodious voice and he sang with the Original Friendly Five and also with Bill Pratt and the Gospel Crusaders. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Barbara Witherspoon-Smith, Elaine Brewers, Cheryl Witherspoon and his brother, Melvin. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted companion Gloria Caldwell; four daughters: Kendra Witherspoon (Sabur Allah, Sr.), Briana Witherspoon (Mario Singleton, Sr.), Michelle Caldwell, Crystal (Nathen) Belcher; seven grandchildren who adorned him as their papa: Sabur Allah, Javeer Allah, Kh’amarie Allah, Ariyana Caldwell (loving caretaker), Najashi Belcher, Zoei Belcher and Mario Singleton all of the city; devoted aunt, Mrs. Mary Lee Little and daughter of Charlotte, NC; nephew, Eric Witherspoon, niece, Lashonda Edwards; extended family: Robert (Constance) Caldwell, Janice (Michael) Pettigrew, Joyce (Ben) Brown, Virginia C. Hairston all of the city, many nieces and nephews of the Brewer and Caldwell family, cousins and friends. A Victorious Celebration of his Life will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2019 from the First Baptist Church, 700 N. Highland Avenue, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 with family visitation at 1:00 p.m. until the hour of service. His remains shall be coached to the serenity of Oaklawn Memorial Gardens for interment and the final flight dove ceremony.
