Jones Coe, Dayton was born and grew up in Oswego, NY, where his ancestors were among its early settlers. He graduated from Oswego High School in 1950, where he was a member of the marching band and men’s glee club. He also worked in the office of Coe Brothers’ Laundry, the family business. He was affiliated with Trinity United Methodist Church and was a member of the Oswego County Historical Society. He relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1951 and graduated from The George Washington University with B.A. and M.A. degrees in political science and history. Dayton held several offices in his college fraternity (Phi Sigma Kappa) where he was also president of its alumni association. He was also president of the School of Government Council and elected to “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.” Dayton was employed forty-four years in the Civil Service by the United States Department of State and United States Information Agency. Most of his career was with the international cultural exchange program working with performing artists and their managements touring abroad under official U.S. Government auspices, ranging from individuals to jazz and folk ensembles, symphonies, and dance troupes. He retired in 1999. Joanne and Dayton met and were married at Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. in 1964. Their son Andrew and his wife Shannah live in the D.C. suburb of Chantilly, VA and have two children, Hailey and Ethan. Daughter Amanda and her husband Jon Hutchins live in Jackson Center in Western PA and have six children: Tommy, Evelyn, Anna, Benjamin, Lucy, and Clara. After living in their Vienna, VA home for 34 years, Joanne and Dayton retired to Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, MD in mid-October, 2005. Dayton was a member of National United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. Previously, he belonged to Foundry United Methodist Church where he was treasurer and a member of the Finance Committee. He enjoyed travel (visiting some 40 countries and all 50 states), photography, reading history, and classical music. Funeral Services and burial will be held in the Spring at Riverside Cemetery, Oswego. Contributions may be made to the Oswego Salvation Army (empire.salvationarmy.org/empireny/oswego), or to the Asbury Methodist Village Benevolent Care Fund, Asbury Foundation, 201 Russell Ave., Gaithersburg, MD 20877 (www.theasburyfoundation.org/benevolent-care/benevolent-care-funds), that provides assistance to residents who have outlived their resources.
