Obituary for Joseph F. Matarese Sr. Joseph F. Matarese Sr. passed away surrounded by loving family on December 5th, 2018 at Samaritan Hospice in Voorhees, NJ at the age of 96. He was born at home on November 11th, 1922 in an area known as, “Polly Cox’s Swamp” near Mt. Holly, NJ. Joe was a long time resident of Burlington and Westampton. He graduated from Steven’s Station Elementary School and the Trenton School of Industrial Arts. He was one of nine children born to the late Frances and James Matarese Sr.. He was pre-deceased by siblings Broge Matarese, Angeline Frappoli, Anthony Matarese, Mary De Flece, Josephine Spoltore, Frank Matarese and Isadore Matarese. In 2015 Joe’s loving wife Emma (Nee: Tomasetti) Matarese passed away. He is survived by his brother James Matarese Jr. Joe will be dearly remembered by daughter, Madelyn Kinemond and husband George and son Joseph Jr. and wife Constance, grandchildren,  and Joseph III. His great-grandchildren, Giavanna Matarese , lovingly referred to him as, “GGPop”. On Veteran’s day 11/11/17, Joe’s 95th birthday, the family took him to Washington, DC to tour the war memorials with honorflight.org. During WWII, Joe served with the Army-79th Engineer Combat Battalion as a Master Sergeant from 1943-1945. In January 1945, he was awarded the Military Purple Heart Medal Award for the Luzon Campaign in the Philippine Islands as well as other commendations for his bravery and efforts. After the war, he joined his father and brothers in a small machine shop that evolved into United Aero Products Inc, a precision machining and fabrication company. Another business venture in the 1950’s was Best-By products which manufactured juvenile baby furniture. Also during this phase of his life, Joe and his brothers enjoyed sport fishing on their boat and hunting at their farm, Matarese Hunting Acres. In the late 50’s, Joe designed and built the home of his dreams and lived there for over fifty years with his wife Emma, until they moved to Brandywine Living in 2013. In the early 60’s, Joe started Al-con Products Inc., which manufactured Aluminum Masonry Joint Cover Systems. His products are in schools, banks, prisons and casinos. He held several patents on his designs. Joe ran this company for over 45 years. In the last five years of his life, “Tomato Joe” as he was called at Brandywine Living, continued his love for growing his heirloom tomatoes in custom designed containers. He generously shared his knowledge, plants and seeds with many who will carry on this tradition. Joe frequently enjoyed outings with his son, grandson, grandson-in-law, and his brother Jim. One of his favorites was “Tomato Pie” at De Lorenzo’s. He was an avid hunter in his day and remained active in so many physical pursuits well into his 90’s. Never one to shy away from a challenge, he frequently replied “I don’t have a problem with that!” He loved this quote…“Old soldiers never die, they just fade away….” Douglas MacArthur Relatives and friends are invited to attend Joe’s Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, December 10, 2018 at 11:00 am at St. Paul’s RC Church, E. Union St., Burlington, NJ with burial to follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Viewings will be held at Page Funeral Home, 302 E. Union St., Burlington on Sunday, from 3-5 pm and Monday from 9-1030am.
