OBITUARY James Gray Woody October 29, 1937 – December 12, 2018 Woody, James G. “Jim”, age 81, of South Knoxville passed away peacefully on December 12, 2018 at UT Medical Center following many years of healthy living afforded by a successful lung transplant. Jim was a lifetime member and elder of New Prospect Presbyterian Church. Jim was a graduate of Fulton High School and attended the University of Tennessee. He served in the United States Navy as a submariner aboard the USS Torsk ( SS 423). Jim retired with 25 years of service as a Captain with the Knoxville City Fire Department and was a residential/commercial contractor and developer for over 55 years. He enjoyed numerous outdoor activities to include scuba diving, boating, fishing, hunting, and camping. Preceded in death by parents William Gray Woody and Edith McTeer Woody; son-in-law, Richard Sterchi; sister, Alice McLemore Morris; brother, Joe Woody; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bucky and Billy Houser. Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Woody; daughter, Kimberly Woody Sterchi, son, Russell (Loida) Woody; daughter, Dawn Woody (Lynn) Nichols; grandchildren, Kevyn Sterchi and Fiancé Steven Witzel, Phillip, Claire, Anna, and Andrew Nichols, Kim Paxton, Cassie Benns, Keena Strickland; 5 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Polly Woody, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Friday, December 14, 2018 at New Prospect Presbyterian Church, 4920 Prospect Road, Knoxville, TN 37920 from 5 to 7 PM with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 7 PM with Rev. Gerry Anders officiating. Family and friends will gather at Berry Highland South at 11 am Saturday, December 15, 2018 for a brief committal service in the chapel followed by interment in Berry Highland South Cemetery.
