George R Wohlwend November 3 1942 December 17 2018

Obituary for George R. Wohlwend George R. Wohlwend 1942 – 2018 George Wohlwend, 76, of Green, Ohio passed away December 17, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 3, 1942 in Suffield, to Joseph P. and Helen E. (Klein) Wohlwend. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elaine Wohlwend; daughter, Krista Wohlwend (Lee Peplinski) of Milwaukee; son, John Wohlwend (Candice Tung), granddaughter, Sidra Wohlwend, and grandson, Jack Wohlwend, of Las Vegas; brothers and sisters, Irene Daugherty, Harry (Anita) Wohlwend, Rose (Ralph) Herman, Jane (Frank) Kordinak, Dr. Albert (Kathy) Wohlwend, and Joseph (Becky) Wohlwend. Other survivors include many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, many cherished friends, and beloved little dog, Nico. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Wohlwend; and sisters, Agnes Wartko and Mary Fouts. George was a 1960 graduate of Suffield High School, and married his high school sweetheart Elaine James on August 22, 1964. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, served in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1960 to 1963, and acquired the skills that led him into the construction and excavation industry, from which he retired in 2007. George enjoyed life, loved his family, treasured his friends, and lived every day to the fullest. He had a dry witty humor, a strong work ethic, and a no-nonsense attitude that belied his warm heart. Nothing was more important to him than his family. He was a devoted husband who adored his wife. With patience and wonder, he showed his children the nighttime stars, and taught his grandchildren to fish. He loved travelling with his family: snorkeling in Hawaii, rafting in the Grand Canyon, skiing all over the West, and cruising around Alaska were some of the highlights. George enjoyed sports, fishing, gardening, and golfing. He was a devoted sports fan, and faithfully supported his Cleveland teams–through the good years and the bad. He also loved his Ohio State Buckeyes. George was a talented gardener, and spent joyous hours in his gardens tending his flowers and feeding the birds. His manicured lawn and glorious flowerbeds were the envy of friends and neighbors, and he worked passionately on seeds, bulbs, and plantings all throughout the year. Although he picked up the game later in life, George was an avid golfer. He enjoyed playing with family and friends, and spent many happy hours (and perhaps a few frustrating ones) on various courses all over the country, including Pebble Beach. One of the highlights of his life was his hole in one, which he got on February 27, 2018 at Seven Hills Golf Club. All throughout his life, George was very active in the church–as a youth in the St. Joseph Parish in Randolph, and for the past 44 years at Queen of Heaven Church in Green. He was passionately involved in Alcoholics Anonymous. He was very proud to have been active for the past twenty-eight years, and developed many lifelong friendships from this wonderful organization. Calling hours will be held 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, December 22 at St. Joseph Church, 2643 Waterloo Road, Mogadore (Randolph). Funeral Mass will be held immediately afterward, 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial immediately following at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in his honor be made to the Interval Brotherhood Home (IBH), St. Joseph Parish, or Queen of Heaven Parish. The family would like to extend a special thank you to family and friends over these past several weeks for your love, kindness, and support. Especially during this difficult time, your thoughtful acts of love and compassion brought joy to George’s days and helped to ease our final burdens. We will be forever grateful–we love you.
