Christine was born on Saturday, June 1, 1929 in Lublin, Poland, the first child of the late Joseph and Leokadja Harko. During World War II, she was separated from her family and was put to work as a caretaker of the children of the Nazi commander at a farm labor camp. At the end of the war, she was reunited with her parents and siblings and journeyed to the United States in hopes of a better life. On the ship to America, she met her future husband, Frank. Entering through the Port of New Orleans, the family was moved to Arkansas by their sponsor and worked on a farm picking cotton. Ever resourceful, Chris found employment in a nearby town taking care of the elder town lawyer and his wife. Through correspondence her relationship with Frank grew and Frank proposed by letter. They were married in 1953 in Eudora, Arkansas. They soon moved to Newark and brought family with them. Christine proudly received her United States citizenship in the early 1970’s. Christine worked at Hallagan Manufacturing, the Home Dairy, and the Newark Manor Nursing home. She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (James) O’Connell of Farmington, NY, and Sandra (Gerard) D’Huy of Baldwinsville, NY; grandchildren, Ryan O’Connell of Canandaigua; Daniel (Brett) O’Connell of Irondequoit; Alexandra D’Huy and Tyler D’Huy of Baldwinsville; great-grandson Jaxson O’Connell of Canandaigua; brother, Wesley (Joyce) Harko of Fort Worth, TX; nieces and nephews in the United States and Poland, and several close friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank, in 1999; and brother, Richard Harko. The family greatly appreciates the wonderful care she received during her residence at the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center.
