Wanda Diane “Birdy” Thompson Cokley was born on April 26, 1964 in Marion, South Carolina. She was the daughter of Robert Lee and Eva Mae Jenkins Thompson. After a brief illness, Wanda departed her earthly life on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at Carolinas Hospital Systems in Florence, South Carolina. Wanda was educated in the public schools of Marion County, and was a 1982 graduate of Marion High School. She later attended and earned her Business Degree from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. During her time at Benedict, she was a part of the Dean’s List, and she also earned various certificates and awards. She was formerly employed with Jenkins Nursing Home, Marion County Medical Center and Burger King for several years. At an early age, Wanda became a member of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, where she was an usher and a member of the choir. Despite her health issues, she was very dedicated to her role as an usher. She also had her own group, “Wanda and the Joy Lights,” and her favorite songs were, “Master, I Know You Can” and “God Has Always Stood By My Side.” Wanda was also known for her favorite saying, “So what; I don’t care!” Wanda leaves to cherish her memories: one son, Edmund Cokley; one daughter, Ju’nyshia Boston, both of the home; two sisters, Beth Ann (Melvin) Goodman of Dalzell, SC; and Jacqueline (Anthony) Gerald of Marion, SC; seven aunts: Elnora, Amy, Mable, Deborah, Gladys, Charlotte and Jean; three uncles: Cleveland, Joe and Charlie; special nephew, Wiggy; special companion, Lenox Acosta; special friends: Marilyn, Denise, and Annie; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
