Obituary for Martha Lewis Smith Martha Lewis Smith, age 88, of Lafayette, passed away at 8:40 p.m. Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Creasy Springs. Born on July 12, 1930 in Lafayette, she was the daughter of the late Fred Sietsma and Dorothy (Vanderkolk) Sietsma. She was a 1948 graduate of Jefferson High School. Martha first married Gene E. Lewis and he preceded her in death. She the married Gene Edward Smith on November 3, 2000 and he preceded her in death on December 13, 2011. She worked for the former Fairfield Manufacturing in the office for close to 28 years and retired in 2000. Martha was a founding member of the Community Reformed Church where she was the bookkeeper for over 30 years. She was the first woman to be ordained as Deacon and Elder in the church. She was very active in the church. She volunteered at the former Home Hospital and St. Elizabeth Hospital as a Pink Lady for over 2000 hours. Martha was the 2015 Awardee of the Franciscan St. Elizbeth Hospital Auxiliary presented by Sheila Klinker from the Indiana House of Representatives. She donated to the Red Cross Blood Bank 88 times. She made quilts for all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Martha and Gene wintered in Naples, FL for 12 years. Surviving are her children: David Lewis (wife: Mary Ann) of Clarks Hill, Jerry Lewis (wife: Tracy) of Romney, Tim Lewis (wife: Cathy) of Lafayette, and Terry Clute (husb: Daryl) of Lafayette, daughter-in-law: Becky Lewis of Pendleton, step-children: Mike Smith (wife: Sue) of Carmel, Edward Smith (wife: Stephanie) of Lafayette and Jim Smith (wife: Jeanna Luck Smith) of Lafayette, 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son: Mark Lewis, sisters: Phyllis Hanstra and Patricia Burkenpas, brother in-laws: Jim Hanstra and Pete Burkenpas. Friends may call 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Community Reformed Church followed by the service at 2 p.m. Pastor Dale Buettner will officiate with interment at Rest Haven Memorial Park.
