Edward C. “Ed” Meier, Jr., 84, a resident of the Forest Grove community, died Friday morning, September 28, 2018 at the Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital in Portland. Ed was born September 30, 1933 in Nyack, New York, the son of the late Edward Charles Meier and Amalia (Mayer) Meier. He was raised and received his education in the Nyack area. Upon graduating from Pearl River High School in Pearl River, New York, he attended Farleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey and earned an Associate of Arts degree. He served one enlistment in the United States Air Force, until he received honorable discharge. He was united in marriage to Helena M. Smyth on November 26, 1966 in Suffern, New York. They celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary this past November. Following their marriage they resided in several states, including New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, California, Wisconsin, and Arizona until 2015 when they returned to Oregon, settling in Forest Grove. Ed worked as a plasterer in the construction industry for 40 years, until his mid-60s. His many interests included astrology, fishing, stamp collecting, and UFOs. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, as a stickler for proper grammar, and his fondness for playing the lottery—even though he never did win the Big One, as he called it. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Amalia Meier. Survivors include his wife, Helena Meier, of Forest Grove, Oregon; his brother Kerry Meier, of Auburn, New York, and his three daughters and sons-in-law, Valerie and Sorell Slaymaker, of St. Paul, Minnesota; Debby and Gary Clark, of San Diego, California; and Audrey and Kevin DeKam, of Albany, Oregon.
