OBITUARY Charlotte R. Levens Charlotte Ruth Levens (Shifra Rivka bat Litman Levin and Chana Ringer) passed away peacefully in her sleep with the comfort of 24/7 hospice care in her apartment at Coleman House in Newton, MA on Friday September 21, 2018. She was 93 years of age and had been hospitalized three times in the preceding few months for worsening of her condition. Charlotte was predeceased by her three loving brothers, Edward age 71 in 1999, Frederick age 84 in 2005, and Ernest age 88 also in 2005. She is survived by her 7 nieces and nephews. Charlotte grew up in Boston and was a life time educator, earning her undergraduate degree at Boston Teacher’s College (now U. Mass Boston), and a masters at Harvard University where she nearly completed her doctorate in Education. She taught then rose to principal and consultant at many schools in New England, California, Illinois and Germany retiring in 1986. Charlotte lived in Florida for several years in the early 1990s, where her nephew David lives, then in 1999, consistent with her lifelong wanderlust she set out for Vermont where she planned to explore a life of organic farming. She loaded up her van on the auto train and headed north. Charlotte disembarked the train in the Washington, DC area and in her impulsive fashion she chose to change plans and settle in Hagerstown, MD where she lived for 18 years in the Francis Murphy Apts. While she didn’t have a farm, she proudly tended a small vegetable garden, reaping the healthy harvest annually. While in Hagerstown, Charlotte was intergenerational programs coordinator for the Washington County Commission on Aging, arranging volunteer seniors to spend time in elementary schools under the auspices of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). In a 2009 local Hagerstown news profile, Charlotte was quoted saying “I’m very unhappy when I’m idle. I have to be busy”. (This rings true as a definite Levens family trait.) In true Charlotte form, she immersed herself in learning about her ancestry well before the explosive growth/fascination with genealogy and availability of Ancestry.com. Over several years, she amassed copious notes and family trees along with many of the now obsolete floppy and compact discs that she transferred to nephew David. Charlotte was a compulsive record keeper and began to record her end of life wishes in 1999. She wished to die as naturally as possible at home without pain and “in a state of physical comfort, afforded by cleanliness, relaxation and in good company”. She therefore made her final move, returning to her roots in the Boston area in 2017 where we were able to help to fulfill Charlotte’s wishes. She will be interred at Sharon Memorial Park in Sharon, MA where her dear mother Anne and father Louis rest. A family gathering is planned for Friday October 12, 2018 at Sharon Memorial.
