Jean Calise, 100, of East Greenwich and formerly West Warwick passed away Wednesday August 22, 2018 surrounded by her loving family at Scalabrini Villa, North Kingstown. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph L. Calise, the former owner of Calise Bakery. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Vento) Volpe. Jean was a devoted wife and mother to her family. She loved cooking for family and friends and was especially known for her eggplant. She was a progressive woman and always was advocating for women’s equality. Jean wanted to ensure her daughters and granddaughters had equal opportunities. At the age of 72, Jean retired from the business office of the Moses Brown School. She then volunteered for Meals on Wheels and gave 20 years of volunteer service to Kent County Hospital. Jean is survived by her daughters Arlene J. Haskins and her husband Robert of Compton, NH and Port St. Lucie, Florida and Carolyn J. Wilkes and her husband Charles of Narragansett. She is also survived by two sisters, Helen Petit and Lily Farland and one brother, Hercules Volpe. She was predeceased by her brothers Joseph and Matthew Volpe. Jean had 4 loving grandchildren, Kristin Wilkes-White, Heather Thomas, Lisa Haskins, and Robert Haskins. She was a proud great-grandmother to Avery, Tyler, and Carly Thomas and Dallas and Drew Haskins. Jean was also blessed with many loving nieces. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Marks Church, 9 Garden Ct., Cranston, RI on Friday September 7 at 10:00 am.
