Frances MacKay Jenckes Christensen, 93, of Es Junction, Vermont escaped her earthly shackles on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 to reunite with her beloved husband Charles Christensen Jr. She was also predeceased by her life-long friend and confidant, sister Ruth, and Rebecca (Hemingway) Christensen, a daughter-in-law, who left us too soon. Her mother, Ruth (Mackay) Jenckes, blessed Fran with a strong spirit; and father, William Jenckes, inspired her lifelong love of music. An intelligent and ambitious woman, she eschewed social norms of the 1940’s to obtain a chemistry degree from Brown University and pursued a career in product development labs until she met the love of her life. Fran married Charlie on September 19, 1953 and together they relished special times spent with Ellie (Christensen) and Arnie Waring, Ruth (Jenckes) and Bob Thornton, and Jan (Thomson) and Howie Christensen. Fran sacrificed her burgeoning career for what she considered a higher calling – her family. She knitted a dedication to serving others into her four boys, just as deftly as she knit each an intricate fisherman’s sweater. She matched relentlessly high expectations to each boy’s individual capabilities, but cooked into all of them a few vital core values: be true to yourself, honest with others, faithful to God, and devoted to family. She amplified these values in their hearts the same way she could make a simple mac-and-cheese dinner seem like a five-star meal. While they sometimes resented mandatory daily music practice, they didn’t dare to “wait until your father comes home”. Today, the family gratefully acknowledges how her love of music enriches their lives through the solemn beauty of a religious hymn or the energetic lift of a classic favorite, which Fran could recall and flawlessly sing acapella right up to her death, always remembering “those who sing, pray twice.” Fran’s keen intellect, quick wit, and strong will also enriched many other lives through participation in the PTA, Association of University Women, Es Junction First Congregational Church choir, and the UVM Choral Union. In her 50’s she rekindled her passion for learning by substitute teaching, retuning to college to obtain her teaching certificate, and joining the faculty at Pine Ridge School in Williston. As her mind and body faded, Fran moved to the Green Mountain Nursing Home in Colchester Vermont. The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the staff for their compassionate care during her nine-year stay. In lieu of flowers charitable contributions may be sent to the Green Mountain Nursing Home Activity Fund in her honor, at 475 Ethan Allen Avenue, Colchester, VT 05446. Surviving Fran are son Alan and his wife Sandy (Haupt) Christensen of Grand Isle, VT, who devoted untold time and energy to care for both parents, and their children who helped provide that support, Dr. Lindsay (Christensen) and Caleb Corse, and Matthew and Nicole (Campbell) Christensen. She also leaves son Carl and wife Lori (Bynum) Christensen of Hollis, NH, son Jon and wife Christine (Leno) Christensen of Waterville ME, and son Andy and wife Elizabeth (Briggs) Christensen of Cumberland, ME, and her additional grandchildren Sam, Nick Emily, Daniel, Jenna, Sarah and Jenn Christensen. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, September 28, 2018 from 3:30pm to 6:00pm at the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service Mountain View Chapel, 68 Pinecrest Drive in Es Junction. A memorial service will follow on Saturday, September 29, at 3:00pm at the First Congregational Church of Es Junction with reception to follow in the church fellowship hall.
