Obituary for Charles Polk II Charles M. Polk II died peacefully on Friday, August 24, 2018. Beloved father of Caroline G. Polk, Charlottesville, VA (Harry Forrest Swope IV); Charles M. Polk III, Richmond, VA (Kelly) and Jennifer P. Ellis, Winnetka, IL (Brian). Dearest Grandfather of Charles R. Ellis II, Chase M. Ellis, Elizabeth G. Polk, Margaret H. Polk, Charles M. Polk IV, Julianne S. Swope and Sally L. Swope. He is survived by his half-brother William L. Polk, Jr. (Carolyn) and cousin Cynthia H. Allen (Charles). He was preceded in death by his parents, William L. Polk and Caroline R. Simpson and his stepmother, Mary Booth Langenberg (Oliver). He also leaves behind a wide range of close friends throughout St. Louis and the United States. Charlie attended Salisbury High School (Salisbury, CT), matriculated at Kenyon College (Gambier, OH), proudly enlisted in the U.S. Army and later graduated from Washington University. His business career included ownership and president of several companies- most recently, American Heritage Enterprises in Creve Coeur, MO. He was also one of the founders of the American Vexillogy Assosication. In his earlier years, Charlie achieved impressive levels in competitive golf, at one time reaching top amateur status locally and nationally. In later years, tennis occupied his athletic pursuits as an organizer, captain, and player, attaining a competitive level of above-average respectability. In more recent years, Charlie enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren; lunch and tennis with his friends; working part-time; caring for his dogs Cooper and Bonzo; and pursuing his interests in reading, support of and respect for local police groups; and organizing various activities related to his love of tennis and travel. Charlie will be remembered for his compassion, his devotion to his family and friends, his kind and generous heart, his love for tennis and his dogs, and his terrific sense of humor. He will forever be missed. A memorial service will take place at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Rd., Kirkwood on Saturday, September 22 at 11:00A.M. with visitation beginning at 10:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice, the Humane Society of St. Louis, Animal Protective Association or the Creve Coeur Police Relief Fund.
