Obituary of Catherine LaMond It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Catherine Fitzgerald LaMond, 81, of Middletown, RI who died Wednesday, September 19, 2018 after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Charles Paul LaMond to whom she was married for 58 years. Born in Newport, she was the daughter of the late Francis Lynch Fitzgerald and Adeline Monticone Fitzgerald. Catherine attended St. Augustin’s School and graduated from St. Catherine’s Academy, Class of 1954. Following school, she became a hairdresser at the old Louie’s on Bellevue Avenue. After starting a family, she worked part-time with her mother in a small home-based salon on Dixon Street which was also her childhood home. The sympathetic ear she lent to her customers, in addition to her unfailing sense of humor, led to a roster of regulars most of whom remained with her for decades. Loyalty was a hallmark of Catherine’s personality. She remained lifelong friends with many of the women she met as girls in the Fifth Ward. Their informal club, known as the “Poets”, was an integral part of her life. They never failed to make each other laugh and stood together through thick and thin. Ever social, she gathered an array of friends over the years from all walks of life. When they outgrew their home on Morgan Street, Catherine and Paul, ‘Cattie and Zag’ to their friends, built a house in Middletown. Catherine became fast friends with the new neighbors. It was a neighborhood filled with many children who were allowed free rein over the surrounding landscape. She lived in the same house for over 45 years. It was the setting for countless cookouts with cousins, baby and wedding showers and even the occasional wedding reception. Upon the death of her husband, she moved back to the Fifth Ward and became a Lady Hibernian. Outside of family and work responsibilities, Catherine was an avid tennis player and was a member of the Casino. She was a prolific knitter, particularly baby sweaters for new arrivals of friends and family. She could often be found at the Salvation Army Thrift Shop where she had an unerring eye for unique finds. Her children and friends grew accustomed to boxes of second-hand clothes arriving on their doorsteps. She was a lifelong member of Gooseberry Beach and enjoyed walks along the shoreline and catching up with her extended family and network of friends. She enjoyed many dinners and brunches with family and friends at her favorite Newport haunt, the Salvation Café. She was a long-time volunteer at the St. Lucy’s soup kitchen and St. Lucy’s Hearth. She leaves six daughters and two sons: Deb LaMond and her partner Kathy Gilroy of Hillsborough, NJ, Charles Paul LaMond Jr and his partner Alexander Molina of Los Angeles, CA, Catherine Quinn and her husband David of Atlanta, GA, Betsy LaMond and her wife, Jean Piette, of East Sandwich, MA, Jennifer LaMond and her spouse Daniel Denton of Portsmouth, Christian LaMond of Los Angeles, CA, Susan LaMond and her spouse George Sullivan of Newport and Alexandra LaMond of Brooklyn, NY She leaves four grandchildren, Alexandra and Charles Quinn of Atlanta, GA.
