Ferdy also was actively involved in his community. He was one of the charter members of Mahomet Legion Post 1015 and was also a charter member of the Mahomet Lions Club. He was one of several men to start the Cornbelt Fire Department in 1953 as well, and served as a volunteer fireman for many years. In addition, he was one of a group of local men who worked to obtain a charter to open the Community Bank of Mahomet in 1959. He also served as President of the Board of Directors of the bank for many years. Ferdy married Doris Deaton in Champaign on October 7, 1945, and they enjoyed 56 years of marriage before she passed away on November 27, 2001. After Doris passed away, Ferdy continued attending as many sporting events as he could. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were a great joy and a blessing to him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, his sisters Lois and Alma, his brother Maurice (Dutch) and his parents. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 6, 2018, from 10:00 to 12:00 at Blair-Owens Funeral Home in Mahomet, with the funeral to follow at 12:00.
