Obituary for Max Eugene Hafner Max Eugene Hafner, 85, of Grand Island, NE, formerly of Oberlin, KS, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2018. To honor Max’ wishes, cremation has taken place and a graveside memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 8th, at the Oberlin Cemetery, with military honors provided by the U.S. Army and Oberlin Honor Guard. Max was born April 22, 1933 in Herndon, KS, the son of Anthony and Mary (Versch) Hafner. He was raised and received his education in Herndon. He entered the United States Army in 1953, serving during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in 1955. On December 27, 1958, Max was united in marriage to Nila Jeanne Walters. An auto mechanic by trade, he was employed for various dealerships and also owned and managed his own mechanic shop. After retiring, Max continued doing mechanic work out of his garage. While living in Oberlin, he served as animal control officer for the city of Oberlin. Raised Catholic, Max was baptized and confirmed in St. Mary’s Church of Herndon. He was a member of Knights of Columbus and the Oberlin Volunteer Fire Department. In addition to mechanic work, Max enjoyed trapping, hunting, horsemanship, gardening, woodworking and especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 59 years, Nila Jeanne; son, Bill (Theresa) Hafner of Lakewood, CO and their children, Ryan, Matthew and Anthony; daughter, Lisa (Shane) Arends of Grand Island and their children, Levi (Kelley), Sierra and Noah and beloved great grandchildren, Adler and Onyx. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Philomena Korte, Leo Hafner, Viola Korte, Marietta Yoos, Tessie Luckert, Kenneth Hafner and Eileen Witt.
