Obituary for James Patrick Murphy Utica – James P. Murphy passed away unexpectedly and peacefully at his summer home in China Lake, Maine on Saturday July 28, 2018 surrounded by his loved ones. “J.P.” was born in Utica, NY, the son of James W. and Barbara A. Murphy (Darling) on April 29, 1957. On June 22, 1991, he married the love of his life, Mrs. Jean M. Murphy (Pierce). J.P. and “Jeannie” spent 35 unforgettable years with family and friends as they travelled around the country. J.P. was a one-of-a-kind who lived life to the fullest and always on his own terms. Often times a rebel without a cause, J.P. suffered the loss of a leg in 1986. His friends and family knew him for most of his adult life as a man who never let his disability define him and overcame any challenges he faced. J.P. spent over 40 years working a career that he loved as a Journeyman Lineman out of I.B.E.W. Local 1249 in Syracuse, N.Y. His career as a Lineman took him far and wide over the years. Together he and Jeannie travelled the country building power lines, seeing new sights, and making many lasting friendships along the way. Crystal and Erin were born from J.P.’s first marriage in 1978 to Marjory “Maggie” Shaw. J.P.’s first priority in life was always his family; after their divorce, J.P., Jean, and Maggie spent the remainder of his life working together to raise their “girls” and family. J.P. spent many years making memories as “Papa Murf” as he will fondly be remembered as by his grandchildren. J.P. was an adventurist with an open mind willing to try almost anything at least once. He was an avid deep-sea diver; fisherman; Red-Sox fan; world traveler; and Harley rider. To know J.P. was to love him. Many will remember his boisterous laugh, his full of life presence, his warm heart, and his smiling Irish eyes. J.P. is survived by his wife; his daughter, Crystal Eve and her husband, Joseph Anthony Amendolare; his daughter, Erin Lynn Murphy; two grandchildren, Nolan and Mia Amendolare; a brother, Peter (Pam) Murphy; a sister Diane (Jim) Famolaro (Murphy); and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins whom he loved dearly. In addition to his immediate family, J.P. is survived by his loving in-laws, Richard (Christine) Pierce; Gail Petronella (Pierce); Katy Pierce; Randy (Dawn) Pierce; close friends, Joseph Caufield, Randolph Craig, and Thomas Lanagan; fellow Union brothers and countless more that will remember time well spent with “Murf”. He was pre-deceased by his mother and father. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of James Patrick Murphy please visit our Sympathy Store.
