Obituary for Donald J. “Moon” Moulin Donald J. “Moon” Moulin, 82, of Alliance, died on April 19, 2017, at 8:40 a.m. at Altercare of Alliance. He was born on December 19, 1934 in Harrisburg, Ohio, to Donald and Irene (Samblenet) Moulin and lived in Alliance most of his life. Moon was a 1952 graduate of Louisville High School and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maximo. Mr. Moulin retired as Manager of the former Alliance Kroger Grocery Store after 33 years of service and then was employed at Marlington High School as a custodian for over 12 years. Don was a member of the Alliance Senior Center where he enjoyed playing Euchre every week. Moon had a notorious reputation as one of, if not the greatest softball pitchers in the history of the Alliance area. Moulin began playing fast pitch softball at age 19 and eventually went to slow pitch softball where he dominated. He pitched for over 100 teams during nearly a 50-plus year career and he led teams from Hubbard, Youngstown, Warren, Salem, Alliance and Sebring to titles, not to mention championships his teams won when he played on softball teams in the winter in Green Valley, Arizona. Moulin was a master of the mound and won over 1000 games as a pitcher in his illustrious softball career. He knew hitter’s strengths and weaknesses and would adjust his pitching routine to that batter. He is a member of both the Ohio Fast-Pitch Hall of Fame in Canton and the Ohio Slo-Pitch Hall of Fame. One of his most successful teams, Chuck’s Inn, played The King and his Court on four separate occasions and Moulin got a hit off the nationally famous Eddie Fisher. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Shirley (Aliesch) Moulin; his daughter, Shelly Moulin of Sebring; his stepchildren, Brenda (Dusty) Rhoads, Richard (Debbie) Rhoads, Sherry (Scott) Watson and Bruce (Bob) Rhoads; four grandsons; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Sherman; two brothers, Robert (Faye) Moulin and Larry (Evelyn) Moulin; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his son, Gregory; his parents; his sister, Martha; and his brother John. The family will receive friends at Walton-Schrader Funeral Home on Monday, April 24, 2017 from 11:00 am – 1:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin, at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Fr._Thomas Dyer officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Absolute Hospice, 339 E. Maple St., Suite 115, N. Canton, OH 44720.
