Carlton H. Roberts Buckland- Carlton H. Roberts, born in Florence, MA on February 29, 1940, raised on a dairy farm in Colrain, MA, died at home on August 2, 2018 of pulmonary fibrosis and kidney failure. He leaves behind his high school sweetheart and wife of 54 years, Susan (Bray) Roberts, their three daughters; Betsy Andrews and Reggie Chatman of San Leandro, CA, Sally and Daniel Mullen of East Granby, CT, and Amy Roberts-Crawford of Shelburne Falls, 7 grandchildren; Benjamin Andrews and wife Lily, Molly, Beckett, and Isaac Mullen, and Avery, Octavia and Adison Crawford. Carlton was one of six children born to parents Harold and Bertha (Wiles) Roberts. Carlton leaves behind his sisters Vivian and Glenn Williams, Marilyn and Jon Griswold, Janet Wagner, and his brother Deane and Patty Roberts, along with many nieces and nephews. He also leaves his dear neighbors, the extended Anderson family, and many close friends. He was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law Raymond Roberts and wife Sheila, and brother-in-law Peter Wagner. Carlton was a graduate of Arms Academy, class of 1958. In 1963, he started C.H. Roberts Custom Construction and remained self-employed until his retirement, while also running the Bray family farm. He built, renovated or restored many of the homes in West County and beyond, including the original Yankee Candle Building and the Pavilion at the Buckland Rec. Red was known for his honesty and humility with a ruffle of humor around the edges. He was dedicated to his craft whether it be a house, a hay bale, or a hand to hold. He was a man of few words, but taught many valuable lessons. In honor of his love of woodworking, he requested donations be made to the Mary Lyon Foundation, PO Box 184, Shelburne Falls, MA 01370 for the purpose of supporting the woodshop at Mohawk Trail Regional School. A Celebration of Carlton’s Life will be held on Thursday, August 9, at 2:00 pm at the Buckland-Shelburne Community Center, 53 Main St., Shelburne Falls.
