Guy S. Hohenhaus, DVM, 57, of Pasadena, MD, died Monday, June 25, 2018 at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He was born in Sauk Centre, MN, on March 13, 1961, the son of Herbert A. Hohenhaus, DVM and Helen S. Hohenhaus, PhD, formerly of Osakis, MN. He was the grandson of Olive Ottinger, formerly of Jamestown, ND. Dr. Hohenhaus was the state veterinarian and chief of animal health for the Maryland Department of Agriculture from 2005 to 2014. He previously served as Maryland’s state public health veterinarian for the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and was a past president of the National Assembly of State Animal Health Officials. He was a professor at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine from 1990-2002 and director of its veterinary epidemiology residency program. A graduate of Laurel Senior High School, Dr. Hohenhaus won the Maryland Heavy weight wrestling title in 1979. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout while a member of Boy Scout Troop 1267. Dr. Hohenhaus was a 1988 graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, receiving his veterinary degree from the University of Minnesota in 1990 and a master’s degree in public health from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda in 1996. He was a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. A 30+ year veteran of the US Army Reserves, Dr. Hohenhaus advanced from the rank of private in a military police unit to that of lieutenant colonel at the time of his retirement from the 354th Civil Affairs Brigade in Riverdale, MD. During his Army service, Dr. Hohenhaus designed and implemented food safety, zoonotic disease, and refugee programs in eight countries. He completed combat missions in Afghanistan with the 407th Civil Affairs Brigade of Arden Hills, MN in 2003-04 and again in 2005. He recieved the Bronze Star in 2004 for his contributions toward rebuilding that country’s veterinary and public health infrastructure. Guy will be missed. Some people are “bigger than life” and there was no one who embodied that phrase more than him. Family and friendships meant everything to Guy. He is survived by his wife Michelle Hohenhaus; his sister Ann Hohenhaus, DVM and nephew Brendan Fox of New York, NY; his brother Jay Hohenhaus, CRNA of Corning, NY and niece Haley Stager of Mansfield, PA; his sister Mary Hohenhaus, MD of Pawtuckey, RI. The family request that memorial gifts be made in support of the Guy Hohenhaus Veterinary Student Travel Fund. This Ffund will support travel to USAHA meetings where students can experience the practice of regulatory medicine in real time.
