Florence Mathilda Stearns 1927 2017

Obituary for Florence Stearns Florence Stearns was set free from her body and entered into the presence of Jesus on Wednesday, November 15, 2017. She was 90 years of age. Florence was born on June 2, 1927 in Bismarck, North Dakota. She married LeRoy Gayle Stearns on April 22, 1954 and 59 years later he preceded her in going home to be with the Lord. Florence and LeRoy had four children, Kathy, Cindy, Mike and Pat. Pat died at the age of 15 in a scuba diving accident. There is no better way to describe Florence than she is an iconic mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was neither flashy nor pretentious. Her life was one that was entirely devoted to raising her children and being actively involved in the lives of each of her grandchildren and her great grandchildren. From playing one game after another on the floor of her living room, to repeatedly reading “Robert the Rose Horse”, to cranking the handle on the Jack-in-the Box until it popped out to the delight of young children, to always having each child’s favorite meals and snacks on hand, nothing was more enjoyable to her than time with her youngsters. Every child was made to feel that they were her favorite and were special and unique. Staying with Grandmom was something that each looked forward to anxiously. Those were always times of laughter, memories, and knowing that each was loved unconditionally. She attended school events, athletic events and anything the children were involved in tirelessly. Meals at her home were legendary. Always plenty. Always excellent. Her spaghetti sauce was without peer. Meals were an event accompanied by stories and laughter and memories and knowing there was no better place in the world to be at that moment. Holidays were times when all family was together and everyone hoped that they would just last a little longer… Florence gave of herself in many ways to many people. She was a Meals on Wheels volunteer for years and was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year. She blessed and encouraged many seniors on her Meals route and in her neighborhood. Florence was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She is survived by son Mike and wife Leslie Stearns of Wimberly, daughter Kathy Stearns of Keller, daughter Cindy and husband Mike Sullivan of Abilene, grandchildren Dawn and husband Billy Spruill of Abilene, Daniel Froh of Dallas, Matthew Sullivan of Abilene and Michael and wife Jill Sullivan of Spring, Texas, great granddaughters Cherokee and husband Josh Davis of Abilene, Hannah Betancourt of Abilene and great-great granddaughter Lynlee Davis of Abilene. Another great-great granddaughter, Adelyn Davis is due in February. A memorial service will be conducted on Tuesday, November 21 in North’s Memorial Chapel at 2:00pm preceded by a private burial service. Family visitation will follow the memorial service. Rejoice in the Lord! Florence has a new body, new eyes and a new mind. She is with the Lord Jesus and has been reunited with her husband LeRoy and son Pat as well as many relatives and friends. The family is grateful for the love, care and compassion extended to Florence by the staff of Wisteria Place Legacy Lane in the last several months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Meals on Wheels of Abilene.
