Obituary for Mr. Charles “Chuck” S. Grimes Charles “Chuck” S. Grimes, 71, of Columbus passed from this life at 6:01 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2018 at his home. A 1964 graduate of Columbus High School, Chuck went on to graduate from Indiana State University then later earned his master’s degree at Indiana University in 1972. Chuck had a teaching career that spanned 44 years which included stints at Clifty Creek, Whiteland Elementary and Lincoln prior to spending the bulk of his career at Southside Elementary – where he retired in 2011. Throughout his 44-year career as a teacher, Chuck also thoroughly enjoyed nearly 40 years of coaching. His coaching experiences included boys’ and girls’ golf at Columbus North, cross country at Northside, football at both Central and Columbus East, baseball at both East and North, and basketball at both East and Southside. Some of the recognitions he received for both his teaching and coaching efforts included: Indiana Golf Coaches’ Association Distinguished Service Award (1989), Jack Cramer Ideals of Athletic Competition Award (1989), Indiana High School Golf Hall of Fame Inductee (1995), William and Sally Hanley Excellence in Teaching Award (2000), Edna Folger Outstanding Teacher Award (2003), a Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation Hall of Fame Inductee (2007) and Columbus North Athletic Department “Best of the Best” (2008). In addition to teaching/coaching, Chuck was also an avid writer. He spent many years writing for The Republic as both a sports correspondent and education columnist. His education column – “Caught in the Act” – highlighted positive happenings in the county’s schools. Chuck was also a contributor to I Golf Magazine. Most recently, he wrote for both the Hope Star Journal and the Greensburg Daily News. Chuck was also the author of four books (Kate’s Mountain and Beyond, Green Tea and Ripe Sage, 180 Days & Wear Green and Keep Smiling). After “retiring” from his career in education, Chuck discovered his second calling that began first as a CASA volunteer which eventually grew into becoming a member of the staff at Advocates for Children – where he worked until his passing. Chuck also spent many hours as a community volunteer. He served on the Patient Advisory Board at Columbus Regional Hospital, spent time with Book Buddies at Clifty Creek, delivered Meals on Wheels, worked with First Tee of Indiana and was the co-chair of the Andy Critzer Memorial Scholarship Committee. Chuck was an enthusiastic Chicago Cubs and Butler basketball fan. He liked to travel with family, garden, fish, and play fantasy baseball and football. Chuck was born July 4, 1946 in Greencastle. He was the son of Paul Jr. and Marjorie Stewart Grimes. He married Linnda E. Shafer on January 28, 1967. Survivors include his wife of 51 years; children, Todd (Kami) Grimes of Columbus, Chris (Amanda) Grimes of Florida and Sarrah (Tommy) Earley of South Carolina; grandchildren, Megan Major, Adam Grimes, Owen Grimes and Indi Grimes; three great-grandsons; and a brother, Kim (Terri) Grimes of Illinois. A celebration of life service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at Southside Elementary School Gymnasium Family and friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to time of service. The family request those attending to honor Chuck by wearing Butler University, Chicago Cubs, Southside Mustangs or golf clothing. Memorial contributions may be made to “Good, Better, Best” Award (in honor of Ross Wallace and Chuck Grimes), Andy Critzer Memorial Scholarship or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana. Private inurnment will be held at Garland Brook Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his parents. Arrangements were made by Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home.
