Obituary for Bernard Marzen Bernard J. Marzen, 90, of Mason City and formerly of Dougherty, died Thursday (June 7, 2018) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday (June 9, 2018) at Epiphany Parish – Holy Family Catholic Church, 722 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Neil Manternach as Celebrant. Visitation will be held Saturday morning from 9:00 am until 11:00 am at the church. Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Bernard’s name to Epiphany Parish, or Hospice of North Iowa. Bernard John Marzen was born on June 17, 1927 in Dougherty, the son of Andrew and Louise (Schumaker) Marzen, he was the oldest of three sons. He attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Dougherty before enlisting in the United States Army. He faithfully served his country from 1946 until his honorable discharge in 1948. On June 22, 1948 Bernard was united in marriage to Margaret Conway at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dougherty. Together they would share nearly 70 years of marriage. For many years Bernard and Margaret made their home outside of Dougherty where they farmed until their retirement in 2012. Bernard was very active within the community, having been a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Dougherty Co-Op Elevator Board, the American Legion, and the Rockwell Community Nursing Home Board. Those grateful in sharing in his life are his wife, Margaret, Mason City; children, Mary Jo (Vic) Stein, Davenport, Jean (John) Cantlin, Baltimore, Larry Marzen, Dougherty, Luanne Schmidt, Rochester, Theresa (Louis) Vetsch, Rochester, and Jolene (Jay) Hibbard, Albert Lea; twelve grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; brother, Jerry (Delores) Marzen, Dougherty; sister in law, Bernadine Marzen, Mason City; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Bernard is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Leo Marzen; and two infant sons, John Andrew and Thomas Joseph.
