Josie (Joe) Leo Smith, 96, of Charlotte passed away peacefully on May 18, 2018 after a year of declining health. Joe was born in Hartsville, SC on August 14, 1921 to the late Joseph Richard Smith and Nellie Windham Smith. He was preceded in death by his siblings; Creola Smith Gainey, Harrison Smith, Lois Smith Jones, and Leola (Ting) Smith Woodworth. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Avis Oliver Smith. Joe is survived by his wife, Emily Marion Smith, daughter, Marilyn Stephens,… Read More » grandchildren, Nancy Stoltz, and Richard Stoltz (Mary); as well as great-grandchildren, Abbie and Anna Stoltz. Also remaining to cherish his memory are four step-children and five step-grandchildren, as well as a host of loving and caring nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Joe will be missed by many friends from his varied life interests, occupation, and civic endeavors. Joe was a lifelong musician, having been given an inexpensive guitar by his father at a very young age. Joe practiced diligently, learning the “picking” style and quickly excelled at his gift. Joe would entertain family and friends and earn pocket change playing at the corner store down on Home Avenue in Hartsville. Joe’s diligence payed off as he was soon on radio in Florence, in several bands and much later on television in Charlotte. One of Joe’s proudest moments was in 2007 when he was inducted into the Louisiana Legacy Hall of Fame in Shreveport, Louisiana by his peers. Joe served his country honorably during World War II in the Army Air Corps. He was based at John H. Payne Field in Cairo, Egypt. Joe, ever the musician, played in a military orchestra, as well. Joe returned stateside in January of 1946 and continued his music endeavors as well as working at Sunoco Products in Hartsville. During a chain of events, Joe relocated to Charlotte in 1947 and began a career in Heating and Air. He went to N.C. State University and obtained his Mechanical Engineer Certification. He had a very long career in the HVAC industry while still maintain his first love-his passion for music. He never knew an idle moment. Joe officially retired in 2016 at the age of 94 ½. He was no ordinary Joe, for sure. A memorial service for Joe will be held June 3, 2018 at 2:00 PM at University Hills Baptist Church, 1500 Suther Road, Charlotte, NC 28213. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the N.C. Baptist Children’s Home.
