Obituary of Karen Baldwin Karen A. Baldwin, 71, of Rhinebeck and New York City, NY, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at her home with her husband and sons at her bedside after a courageous battle with kidney cancer. Born on December 6th, 1946, in Kenton, OH, she was the daughter of the late Robert F. and Ruth (Wentz) Sijan. Karen married William J. Baldwin on March 22, 1969 in Sandusky, Ohio, and he survives at home in Rhinebeck. Karen was a Certified Nurse Midwife, receiving her MS in Maternity/Midwifery Nursing from Columbia University in 1979 and serving as a clinical midwife and director of midwifery services for more than 25 years at a number of hospitals in NYC including Beth Israel Medical Center, Gouverneur/Bellevue, Jacobi Hospital and North Central Bronx, among others. She brought thousands of healthy babies into this world and was a passionate advocate for maternal and child health and was active in support of Planned Parenthood. She received her doctorate from Teachers College in Health Education, focusing on women’s health in 2003 and has served on the faculty of Rutgers University School of Nursing (2004-05), and Mount Saint Mary College (2005-13), where she directed the Graduate Nursing program. Most recently she has taught as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Health Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. She was appointed a Fellow in the American College of Nurse Midwifery. Karen was also a certified yoga instructor and taught classes for senior citizens in community centers in NYC. Karen and Abigail (her 5-year old Lab) were certified by the Good Dog Foundation and provided dog therapy services for students at Teachers College during mid-term and final exam periods. In addition to her loving husband, William J. Baldwin, she is survived by her sons; Aaron (Gina) Baldwin of Delmar, NY and their daughter’s Rebecca and Elizabeth; Justin (Alison) Baldwin of Glen Rock, NJ and their daughters, Katelyn and Madeline; her brother, Scott (Kathy) Sijan of Lakeville, MN; along with extended family, colleagues, and friends. A celebration of Karen’s life will be arranged by the family at a later date. Interment will be private. Memorial donations may be made in Karen’s memory to Planned Parenthood of Mid-Hudson Valley or to the American College of Nurse Midwifery Student Assistance Fund.
