Alice Therese Murphy Langdon April 27 2018

Alice Therese Murphy Langdon passed away peacefully on April 27, 2018 at her home in Old Orchard Beach. She was born and raised in Bronx, NY and was the daughter of Alice Acquinas O’Neill Murphy and James Francis Murphy. She graduated from St. Nicholas of Tolentine and attended Fordham University and the University of Southern Maine. Alice moved to Old Orchard Beach in 1969. Alice began her career with the New York Telephone Company in the Bronx. Alice started as a service representative and, after moving to Maine, worked at the Biddeford office of New England Telephone Company. She became an instructor for the company traveling from Maine to Massachusetts. She eventually rose to the position of Manager of the Portland business office retiring after 30 years with NYNEX, now known as Verizon. Alice was a single, working mother and never once complained or stopped working to provide all she could for her daughters. After retirement she worked as the Deputy Registrar of Voters for the town of Old Orchard Beach and as a member of the OOB Police Department as a parking enforcement officer. She served on the OOB Zoning Board of Appeals, OOB Conservation Commission, OOB Planning Board and the OOB Recreation Department. She also worked and volunteered at the Libby Memorial Library for many years. Alice was very involved in the library’s fundraising efforts, organizing an annual art show in Memorial Park, that helped the library complete an expansion, more than doubling its size. She also became known as the “library police” as she would call patrons with overdue books, in her distinguishable voice, reminding them to return their overdue items. Most were returned shortly after Alice was active in her communities and served with many organizations including the Holy Family Club in Bronx, NY. She was a founding member of the OOB Girl’s Softball League, although she had never played the sport, established the league for her daughters and their friends. She was an active officer of the OOB Band Boosters chaperoning many memorable band trips. She also continued her volunteer efforts as an energetic salesperson advocating for funds for her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. It was almost impossible to say no to Alice when she asked for donations to support a program, whether it was for the OOBHS basketball program, the OOB skateboard park or the Libby Memorial Library. Alice loved to read, play cards and board games, shop and have lunch with friends. She loved to laugh and surrounded herself with her family, her lifelong friends in New York, and her cherished friends in Maine. Her door was always open and she welcomed all. She was grateful that, in her retirement, she was able to enjoy vacations to St. Maarten, Florida, Hawaii, Texas, and Arizona. Alice was predeceased by her parents, her longtime companion John Francis Donnelly, and her sister Patricia (Pam) Blake. She is survived by her brother James Murphy, Jr. and his wife Colleen, her daughter, Donna Langdon Stearns and her partner James Kilbride, her daughter Denise Therese Rancourt, three grandsons, Kyle, Zander and Taylor, her niece Alice Blake Embury and her husband Matt and their children Joey, Blake, Colleen, Thomas and Patrick, many nieces, nephews and friends who fondly called her Aunt Alice. Her grandsons and their friends will greatly miss playing Rummikub and Skip-Bo at her kitchen table and sharing a Grandma’s Pepsi with her. Visiting hours will be held at the Old Orchard Beach Funeral Home at 36 Portland Ave. on Friday, May 4th from 4:00 to 7:00pm. The funeral service will be Saturday, May 5th at 11:00am at St Margaret’s Church in Old Orchard Beach.
