Constance Hininger, 94, of Wapello, died at 4:25 AM Thursday, May 24, 2018, at Wapello Specialty Care. Born July 25, 1923, in Oakville, she was the daughter of Verne Wilson and Cecil Garrett Thornton. On January 12, 1946, she married Oren Hininger. He died on June 18, 2015. Constance worked as a homemaker, school cook for Wapello School District, and at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. She graduated from Oakville High School. She was a member of Oakville United Methodist Church. She was a very active member of the VFW and the Wapello Post #5166. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, spending time with family and wintering in Texas with her husband. Survivors include two daughters, Gail (Neal) Boeding of Fort Madison and Susan (Phil) Vardaman of Lago Vista, TX; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marjorie Stoller-Walker of Raleigh, NC. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one brother, Verne W. “Mike” Thornton. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory. The private family graveside service will be held at Edwards Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the University of Iowa Diabetes Research Foundation.
