Obituary for Jinny Hayden (Virginia Cheek) Jinny Hayden (Virginia Cheek), age 69, of Lilburn, Georgia, died suddenly (but peacefully) at home on Sunday May 27, 2018. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth “Beth” Hayden Hogan and her husband, Jason of Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren, Jonas Michael Hogan, Elise Andreana Hogan and Esme’ Ruby Hogan; her sister in law, Jackie Austin Cheek; nephew, David “Chip” Cheek; niece, Davina Cheek Delong; other family members, Barbara Kazda of Lawrenceville, GA, Roy Barrett of Duluth, GA, Dorothy & Paul Sims of Dacula, GA, and Sandy Batchelor of Loganville, GA; her beloved dog Rosie, and her Siamese cats; and a host of friends. Virginia, an Atlanta native, was born on July 21, 1948. She was a blessed surprise to her parents Clarence and Bessie Cheek (Rohlman) and older brother, David C. Cheek. Growing up in East Point, she had a magical childhood. Much of it revolved around East Point United Methodist Church with buckets of friends- particularly Beth, Sheila, and Nancy. After graduating from Headland High in 1966, her conscience led her to attend the prestigious Auburn University while many of her classmates went to a little school in Athens. War Damn Eagle. She married her college sweetheart, Mike Hayden, and earned a degree in education. They lived and worked in cities all over before settling in Atlanta in 1974 to start a family. Even though divorced, they remained friendly and delighted together in their grandchildren. A lifelong learner, she earned a Master’s from Oglethorpe University in 1990, and an EDS from Piedmont College in 2006. She retired as a teacher from Gwinnett County Public Schools in 2012 after a long career there encouraging children at B.B. Harris Elementary, Parsons Elementary, and Nesbit Elementary. She was twice named teacher of the year, making it to the finals one year. It delighted her when former students ran up to her calling “Math Mama.” In “retirement”, she loved sharing her passion and pedagogy through teaching educators at Kaplan University. With her best friend Barbara, anything could be an adventure. They loved steak dinners and travel to the beach and the mountains. She was grateful and honored to be the other sister to Barbara, Roy, Dorothy, and Sandy. She enjoyed reading and took her grandchildren to the bookstore every chance she got. She recovered from the desertion of the Atlanta Braves by following her grandson’s early pitching career. She loved Elise’s art and passionate approach to life. She liked to watch Esme learn and create mischief. She was so pleased with Beth’s Master’s Degree and new career in planning. She was just as proud of Jason’s career as a firefighter, considering him as more than just a son-in-law. Jinny loved football, her friends and family– and the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. On October 22, she will be celebrating her 35th year of sobriety in heaven with Tom “Buttercup” Flattery and other friends of Bill who were saving her a seat. Her laugh. The world is too quiet without it. Please make a point to laugh—loud, long, and deep—whenever you get the chance. Life is too short to take yourself so damn seriously.
