James (Jim) Earl Mathis, age 79, died peacefully at his home in Marietta on May 26, 2018. He was born on January 19, 1939 in Washington,DC where he lived until 2002 when he moved to Georgia to marry Susan Deborah Shaffer. Jim was a man of many interests and passions. He was a Marine, a mountaineer, a hiker, a skier and a story teller. He attended The University of Maryland and American University where he earned a Master’s degree in information technology. He retired in 1999 after working… Read More » for the federal government for over 25 years. Three days later, he was skiing in Zermatt, Switzerland and never looked back. His love of Switzerland began in 1990 and led him to his second career, first working as a guide and later owning his own company, Swiss Hiking Vacations. Jim was beloved by his clients and many friends, all of whom will testify to his knowledge of trivia and his ability to spin a story. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Henry W. Mathis and Doris Bryan Mathis as well as his stepfather James Mann. He is survived by his loving wife, Susan; his brother, Sam; his sister, Linda; and many nieces and nephews. Jim’s wishes were that he be cremated and that his ashes be scattered at the top of the Matterhorn which he summited at the age of 55. A celebration of Jim’s life will take place later. In Jim’s memory, the family requests that donations be made to Disabled American Veterans. Carmichael Funeral Home- Marietta
