Bertram (Bert) Reid Carraway, Captain U.S. Navy Ret. age 94, of Charlotte, NC, died April 1, 2018 at the Cypress retirement community. He was born in Mississippi on Feb. 2, 1924. Bert was predeceased by his parents, siblings, daughter-in-law Debi Carraway and son Bert Reid Carraway Jr. He is survived by his beloved wife of 74 years, Bette Carraway; three children, Robert Carraway; Coleen (Thomas) Marshall; Kathy (Robert) Bailey; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Originally… Read More » from Florida, Bert moved to Charlotte in 1998 to be closer to family. He spent 30 years in the Navy after joining at age 18 and serving on LST 890 in the South Pacific during WWII. He was recalled during the Korean war after he received his law degree from the University of Miami. He served as a Judge Advocate General officer until his retirement in 1973. His duty stations included South Carolina, Guam, Florida, Morocco, Washington D.C., New York and Viet Nam. He received many awards, including the highly prestigious Legion of Merit medal. Bert retired to Miami where he worked in private practice as an estate attorney. Bert was an avid sportsman, excelling in tennis, golf, bowling, and badminton. He loved to spend time in the Everglades with his brother-in-law and other family members. He was a master of card tricks and was able to fix almost anything. He and Bette loved spending time at their summer home in the mountains of NC. He was known for his intellect, honesty, fairness and love of family and will be dearly missed by those he left behind. A family memorial service will be held Saturday, June 30. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society
