Obituary for August “Gus” Turnbull
Mechanicville, NY August “Gus” Turnbull of Mechanicville, NY, passed away on Sunday, April 1st 2018, when he broke free of his earthly bonds to take a seat at the Lord’s Table. This after a long and courageous battle with lung disease, and most recently cancer. God has called him home for a well deserved rest.
One of 8 children, Gus was born in Schenectady, NY on November 8th 1936 to Peter and Lucille Turnbull. Following his graduation from high school, Gus enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he proudly served from 1959 to 1963. He married his wife Kathleen Foote Turnbull on July 27th 1958. He worked as a tractor-trailer driver for over 30 years for Sweet Life Foods and then Super-Valu Foods. He was a member of the “Million Mile Club,” having logged over one million miles of accident-free driving. Gus was an avid fisherman in his spare time, and while not always successful in that endeavor he loved to be out on his boat fishing. His boat was appropriately named the “SS NO FISH.” Most of all, he was tremendously proud of his family, which he felt to be his greatest accomplishment.
Despite the health struggles he endured over the last several years, Gus was never one to complain, but soldiered through each adversity with grace and strength. He will be missed for his wonderful sense of humor and love of life, and maybe even for the occasional crankiness that earned him much teasing.
Gus is pre-deceased by four brothers, David, Maurice, Peter and Charles Turnbull.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife and sweetheart, Kathleen Turnbull, of Mechanicville NY, whom he was preparing to celebrate 60 years of marriage with in July of this year. A loving and supportive father, he is survived by his daughter, Janise (Mark) Smith of Schaghticoke, NY, his son Joseph (Janet) Turnbull of Chicopee, MA, and proud Papa to 4 grandchildren, Kailyn, Mark, Brian, and Nathan. He is also survived by his siblings, Joan (Roger) Briggs, Francis Catalfamo and Raymond Turnbull.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 6, from 10 to 12 at the Tunison Funeral Home 105 Lake Avenue Saratoga Springs New York 12866. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church 141 Lake Avenue Saratoga Springs New York 12866.
Burial will be in the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery at a later date, at the convenience of the family.
