Waterville-Gary David Socquet, 49, of Waterville, died in remarkably inconsiderate fashion on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. It came as a surprise to exactly no one that he passed away at the bar, given that he was a world-class barroom philosopher and, like most of the greats, did his best work with a drink in hand. Gary was born in Waterville on January 4th, 1969. He graduated from Oak Grove Coburn School in 1987, and earned his BA in English (Creative Writing Concentration) from Colby College… Read More » in 1991. He somehow managed to work in both publishing and finance over the course of his professional life, which when you think about it (and he did) is kind of a weird leap. He was of slightly below average height, though he would have insisted otherwise. He had impossibly hairless calf muscles that looked as though they were made of porcelain. Really, you had to see these things. Gary was a polymath, brilliant and passionate, indubitably himself. A skilled, dedicated reader and writer. A connoisseur of music, of story in all its forms. A friend who was at his absolute best when those he cared about were at their worst. A frustrated idealist often mistaken, even by himself, for a cynic. A practical joker whose sense of humor was eclipsed only by his capacity for fierce, abiding love, a love he extended to all, but that was strongest by far for his daughter Braden Lily, who was without question the great romance of his life. Those who survived Gary include Braden and her mother Michele Sheerman; his companion (and partner in crime) Katie Witham; his father Lee Socquet; siblings Peter Socquet and wife Liana, Katrina Knights and husband Keven, Lee Socquet Jr. and partner John, and Angela Socquet Bonilla; nieces Autumn, Kayla, Sonya, Jessie, and Julia; and nephews Nicholas and Thomas. He was preceded in death by his mother, Cheryl Socquet. At the time of his death Gary was employed by Nicholson, Michaud and Company in Waterville, where he was and is much loved. Gary understood the true nature of time, which meant he knew death is simply a state of existence inaccessible to the living. Sort of like being unable to get a phone call through to someone. And as a man who loathed talking on the phone, he would have told you that’s really not so bad. Services will be private.
