Verna Lucille (Lu) Davis passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her four children on Wednesday, March 28th at the age of 96. Lu was born in September 1921 to Roy and Helen (Johnson) Dodd in Indianapolis, Indiana. There, she met her husband James T. Davis. In 1958, they moved their family to Santa Maria, CA. This is where Lu became an active member within the community. She was involved with the Minerva Club and a social member with the Santa Maria Country Club. She also attended St.… Read More » Louis de Montfort Catholic Church. Most people from the area may remember Lu from when she worked at Holser and Baileys and retired from Holser’s in the mall downtown. Lu was a recreational golfer and bridge player. Bridge came to be her game of choice in her later years, which solidified her lifelong friendships. Lu loved traveling which included visiting several national parks, New York City, Seattle, and trips to Ireland and Scotland. She loved cooking and entertaining for her friends and family for any and every special occasion. Her friends will remember her for her delicious pies, homemade candy, crab feasts, paella, and “happy” hours.
Lu and Jim (who preceded her in death in 2010) raised 4 children, Phillip and his wife, Janet (Clovis, CA), Mark and his partner, Martin (Manhattan, NYC), Kathy and her husband Sidney Cross (Bakersfield, CA), Jennifer and her wife, Cyndy (Washington DC). She also leaves behind three grandchildren, all of Bakersfield CA, Joleen Cross, Courtney Tiede and her husband Ryan and Jacob Cross, and two step-grand children Kayla and John Gaughan (St. Augastine, FL) and Kamren and Kyle McInstosh (Madera, CA). What really became her pride and joy were her 3 great-grandchildren and 2 step great-grandchildren, who she doted on every chance she could.
She had many dear friends whom she adored and considered family. The children want to send a very special thanks to her dear caregiver, Eleanor, whom she loved with all her heart.
Services/Celebration will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice. In lieu of flowers, consider donating to the Santa Maria Humane Society, as Lu supported their cause as an avid lover of animals.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Verna Lucille Lu Davis 2018.SOURCE
