JANESVILLE — Helen Mary Cochand, age 90, of Janesville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at the Agrace Center for Palliative Care. She was born on August 1, 1927, the daughter of Christ and Anna (Gledj) Zorich. Her parents emigrated from the former Yugoslavia to Chicago, and had seven children: four boys and three girls. Helen was the eldest daughter, and the last surviving member of her family. She grew up in Chicago and attended Robert Lindblom High School.
In 1951, Helen Zorich met the love of her life, Glen Cochand, at Lake Lawn Lodge in Wisconsin. Four months later, on December 24, 1951, they were married in New York City, where Glen had just graduated from The New York School of Interior Decoration. In 1952, they moved to Chicago, where they lived for four years before moving to Janesville in 1956. In Janesville, Glen worked alongside his parents, Leon and Iva Cochand, at Cochand’s Upholstering and Interiors – a business founded in 1942 by Leon. Glen and Helen were devoted parents to their three children. In 1956, they bought their treasured home, where they lived for the rest of their lives. They were both very proud of the vegetable garden they created in their backyard where they grew such things as raspberries, pears, tomatoes and green peppers. Helen was a wonderful cook, and made exceptional Christmas cookies and jams every year that she gave to her family, relatives and friends. She enjoyed reading and was interested in everything and everyone. She loved to laugh and make people laugh. She played Mah Jongg for over twenty years with her close friends on a weekly basis. The couple also played bridge, belonged to the Dance Club and the First Congregational Church. In addition, she made many friends at her Tops 840 club, as well as her favorite store, Schnucks.
Helen is survived by her three children: Cynthia Cochand of New York, Joseph Cochand (Nancy), and Christina Cochand of Chicago, along with many beloved nieces and nephews. Her husband, Glen, preceded her in death in September 2006. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her parents-in-law, her brothers, Blaise, Louis, Christy and Mitchell Zorich, and her sisters, Anna Radick and Zorka Zorich, along with her niece, Barbara Singer, and her sister-in-law Marge Zorich.
A Funeral service will be at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY. A Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 11:00 am until the hour of service at the SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY. Interment will be in Oakhill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Agrace Center for Hospice and Palliative Care.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Helen
