Mary Helms Cathey, 91, of Martinsville, Virginia peacefully passed away on Friday, March 30, 2018, at King’s Grant Retirement Community. Mrs. Cathey was born on March 27, 1927 in Union County, North Carolina, and grew up with her parents and brother in Charlotte, North Carolina. After graduating from Thomasboro High School, Mrs. Cathey attended Brevard College in Brevard, North Carolina. While returning home from college, Mrs. Cathey met her beloved husband, Glenn, who served in the Army… Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Mary and Glenn were married on February 17, 1950 and celebrated over 66 years of marriage until his passing in May, 2016.
Mrs. Cathey was devoted to the Lord, her husband and family, and enjoyed cooking. While raising three boys, Mrs. Cathey always found time for others and was a long time member of both Paw Creek Presbyterian Church and Chadwick United Methodist Church. Many of Mrs. Cathey’s family and friends will remember and long for her delicious cookies she made and sent every Christmas.
Mrs. Cathey was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Martin Cathey; her parents, Wriston and Arlie Helms; son, Timothy Glenn Cathey; grandson, Dr. Mark Glenn Cathey; and brother, Charles Huggins Helms.
Mrs. Cathey is survived by her sons, Russell Stewart Cathey (Debra) of Augusta, Georgia and Joel Lee Cathey (Aurelia) of Keysville, Virginia; grandchildren, Matthew Stewart Cathey (Megan) of Macon, Georgia and Sharon Cathey Smith (Ryan) of Blacksburg, Virginia and four great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the wonderful and dedicated staff at King’s Grant for their loving care.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Forest Lawn West Cemetery, Charlotte, North Carolina with Rev. Greg Marshall officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the King’s Grant Fellowship Fund, 350 King’s Grant Way Road, Martinsville, Virginia 24112.
